Planning your Move
Will It Fit Down Your Street?
Most removal quotes are a price for a van and a couple of pairs of hands. The part that actually decides whether your moving day runs smoothly is the bit nobody asks about until the lorry turns up: where it can park, how far the crew has to carry, and whether your furniture fits through the door at the other end.
Maidstone throws up more of these problems than most Kent towns.
The town centre conservation area covers Week Street, Gabriel's Hill, Earl Street and the High Street: a mix of listed buildings, upper-floor flats above shops, and streets where a 7.5-tonne lorry simply cannot wait. Gabriel's Hill has been pedestrianised since the 1990s, so a move from a flat above a shop there is planned around access windows, not just a start time.
Head out to Bearsted, Loose or Otham and there are different challenges: conservation-area lanes, flint walls, and driveways that were built for Victorian transportation rather than a Luton box van.
We survey before we quote. That means a proper look at access at both ends, a decision on vehicle size.
What we check before we quote
- Vehicle Size and Access - at both ends
- Doorways, stairs and lifts
- Management Company notice - for apartment blocks

Moving in and around Maidstone
Maidstone's diverse range of one way streets, access points provide their own unique challenges that we have the experience to solve
The town centre and conservation areas
Flats above the shops on Week Street and Gabriel's Hill, Victorian townhouses off Earl Street, and the streets running down toward the river. These moves are about access planning rather than distance: restricted waiting, pedestrianised stretches, narrow staircases and the occasional window lift.
We'll tell you at survey stage if we think a smaller shuttle vehicle and a transfer is the sensible approach, and we'd rather have that conversation in your living room than on the morning.
The newer estates and riverside apartments
Grove Green, Downswood, Penenden Heath and the riverside apartment developments along the Medway. Modern layouts are usually kinder on access, but apartment blocks bring their own rules: lift bookings, loading bay permits, and management companies that want notice in writing.
The villages
Bearsted, Barming, Allington, Boxley, Detling, Coxheath, Boughton Monchelsea, East Farleigh, Loose and Otham. Beautiful places to live and genuinely awkward places to get a removal lorry into.
Several sit within conservation areas, which brings single-track approaches, low branches and verges you can't put a wheel on. Our team know these lanes: it's our own back yard.
Commuting to London
Plenty of our Maidstone moves are people arriving from London, or relocating within Kent to shorten a commute from Maidstone East, Maidstone West or Barracks. If you're moving in from a London flat, the usual surprise is volume: a two-bed Maidstone house can take more furniture than people expect, and it's better to know that at survey than on the day.
A Recent Move in Maidstone: Maidstone Museum
Not every Maidstone move is a house. When Maidstone Museum relocated to new premises, they chose us (and the reason that's worth mentioning on a page about house removals is that museum work is the same skill set as moving your grandmother's bureau) just with more paperwork. Fragile, irreplaceable and we know how important it is to get it right.
They were moving to new premises still within Maidstone and required a professional removals company to help them. Although initially this seemed like quite a daunting task. Moving a museum is no different to any other office removal. Initially we send out one of our surveyors to work out the cubic volume of furniture that needs to be moved and to look at the access to the property.
This removal was slightly different to the usual moves as the client was only moving within walking distance. Instead of loading up a vehicle and unloading it the same day, we used a larger number of staff with pallet trucks and trolleys to walk the furniture and crates to the new address. Although the goods were very fragile, once they were safely packed up into boxes and crates we could carry out the move in the same way that we would do any other domestic removal.
At the end of the removal the museum were happily moved into their new premises and could begin unpacking. They resumed operation the following day and we could add the Maidstone Museum to our list of happy customers. Although this was a specialist removal, we can cater to moves of all different shapes and sizes. We use all of our own removals staff, we have an impressive fleet of removals vehicles and our own storage facility that can hold up to 650 storage containers on site. Reviews from Maidstone Customers
I chose Britannia Bearsbys as my removals on my recent relocation from Kent to Nottinghamshire. From the first home visit to delivering my belongings, after a brief spell in storage, they were nothing short of being professional, polite, understanding and sympathetic of my situation. In all honesty they went the extra mile to make my move as least stressful as it could be. Care was taken to move large pieces of furniture in awkward spaces and offering a dissembling and reassembling service was a complete God send! Thank you guys for all your hard work and for providing an outstanding service.
Excellent service from both sets of our removal men (we went into store and then out again a few days later). Nothing was to much trouble. A polite and helpful team really made the moving day the easiest part of the whole process. All my wife had to do was make the tea! Would definitely recommend. Keep up the good work!
From my very first communication with Britannia Bearsbys, I was impressed by their efficiency, transparency, speed and clarity of response and professionalism. On the practical side, once the removals team arrived at my home, they were friendly, thorough, reassuring and very efficient. The whole team, both administratively and practically, have worked with me to find the best moving solution to fit my needs and I would not hesitate to use them again or recommend them to others.
Maidstone Removals: Your Questions Answered
How much does a removal company cost in Maidstone?
Each move is unique within the Maidstone area, depending on the size of your property, access at both ends, and how much packing you'd like us to handle. Longer-distance moves are quoted on volume and distance. Every quote is itemised and follows a free survey.
How far in advance should I book a removal company in Maidstone?
Four to six weeks is comfortable. Fridays and month-ends book up first, and summer is busiest: if you're completing on the last Friday of the month between June and September, book as early as you can.
Do you cover the villages around Maidstone?
Yes. Bearsted, Barming, Allington, Boxley, Detling, Coxheath, Boughton Monchelsea, East Farleigh, Loose, Otham and the rest. Our depot is in Aylesford, so the whole borough is local to us.
